Did you know that the Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources Industry:
  1. Is the second largest industry in the state of Michigan.
  2. Contributing over $101.2 billion annually to the state economy.
  3. Since 2004 has had a growth rate of 60%.
  4. Employs 1 million Michigan residents, about 22% of the Michigan workforce.
  5. Produces over 300 commodities and is the second diverse state in the U.S.
  6. Has a workforce deficit.

Founded in 1894, the Institute of Agricultural Technology delivers innovative, educational programs that develop career-ready graduates through intensive, practical learning and skill enhancement in agricultural, environmental, and applied technologies. Certificate programs vary from 18 to 24 months in length, are respected statewide and nationally, and several have international reputations.  Classes are taught by faculty and staff in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, so students gain from the research and extension programs at MSU. 90% of our students have employment at the time of graduation and 65% go back to their home communities. Most gradates will receive 3 to 4 job offers.

Admission to the Institute of Agricultural Technology is based on:
  • Student academic performance in high school
  • Student work experience, organized school activities, community involvement, and conduct
  • Demonstrated interest in program of study
  • Available space in your desired program
  • Both turf programs require previous work experience and a letter from your immediate supervisor

Application Checklist:
  • Complete the IAT online application for admission, including the personal statement (http://www.canr.msu.edu/institute_of_ag_tech/apply_to_iat)
  • Pay the $65 nonrefundable application fee using a credit card or electronic check
  • Have your official high school transcript(s) sent to MSU by your high school through an electronic delivery service such as Docufide, Naviance, or E Scrip-Safe.  Schools that do not have access to these services may send official paper documents via U.S. mail to the MSU Office of Admissions, Hannah Administration Building, 426 Auditorium Rd., Room 250, East Lansing, Michigan 48824-2604.
  • Only the Sports & Commercial Turf Management and Golf Turf Management programs require previous turf management work experience and a letter of recommendation from your immediate supervisor as part of the application for admission.  Students applying to one of these programs who do not meet the previous work experience may contact the program coordinator for application options.
